How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Question 4
Above is an Emaze presentation, incase you are unable to view the this presentation here is what each slide says:
Slide one:
Research & planning stages, Technology, Research processes, methods and sites used by Emily Ventress
Slide two:
Blogger - research
I used Blogger to blog throughout my construction and research states of my production. Blogger is a blog-publishing service, that allows more than one person to edit the same blogs. In 2003, Blogger was bought by Google, blogs normally have a subdomain of blogspot.com. Blogger is a really easy and effective way of keeping a formal diary of where you are up to with what. It is also easy as it's all online so whilst you're doing some online research or editing your production on iMovie you can use that computer to also update your blog to what you're doing/have done.
Slide three:
YouGov - research
I used YouGov to research target audience as I wanted to see who watched Waterloo Road and Skins the most as my production is kind-of in between these two as it has a Waterloo Road feel with the sort of storylines you see in Skins. YouGov is an international Internet-based market research firm, it was founded in the UK in May 2000. You can use the YouGov Profiles section to find out who consumes a product or service the most, this is data from thousands of people filling out surveys on themselves and what products/services they do/do not use. I used YouGov Profiles Lite to look at programmes I based mine on like Waterloo Road and Skins. This helped me choose my target audience by helping me identify gender, age and social grade. I chose unisex but predominately female, ages 13-18 and social grade C2DE.
Slide four:
SoundCloud - research
I used Soundcloud to trial different copyright free musics and sound effects such as Facebook pling and the Apple iPhone message sent notification sound and the Apple iPhone message received sound. SoundCloud is an effective service to use as you can make online playlists of downloaded songs and downloaded sound effects for other people to search and listen to so allowed me to share what I was thinking about what sounds to use with my blog for others to see. Initially I was looking at sourcing music from Purple Planet which is a copyright free music website. In the end I decided on Stronger Than Ever by Raleigh Ritchie. I recorded myself doing the piano for the first 38 seconds of my production and used the song for the rest of it.
Slide five:
Digital Equipment - filming
Whilst filming my footage I used a digital Camera (on non-digital tripod). My camera is a DSLR Nikon D3200, it works really well even though I've had it a few years now, digital footage is also a lot easier than manual old fashioned proper film, especially if you want to edit it post filming. To do the sound in the first 38 seconds of the production I also used a keyboard, keyboards are an electrical musical instrument, often used to play a similar sound to a piano. Lastly, I used my MacBook's iMovie to edit all of my footage and put it with the music.
Slide six:
Photoshop - making TV listings magazine cover
I used Adobe Photoshop to create and make my TV listings magazine front cover featuring my new soap opera 'Westview High'. This was an easy choice of software to use as I had used Photoshop many times before in my other A-Level subjects so was familiar with using this. I used the 'Lasso' tool a lot, in combination with the 'magic wand' so I was easily able to cut around my characters I had photographed but also the characters in the other TV programmes I featured like the characters out of Broadchurch and The Replacement.
Slide seven:
After Effects - production
I used After Effects for my emblem animation. This took a long time (over 6 hours) to make but looks quite professional. To make this I followed a YouTube tutorial on how to complete this affect, this is why it took so long as I am not used to working with After Effects, I also had to do it in quite a tight proximity of time as I was using the Adobe Creative Cloud 7 day trial. The YouTube tutorial wasn't that difficult to follow but as I did not go at the same pace as the filmer of the video, it involved a lot of pausing it to keep up. The filmer was also working from an older version of After Effects so some buttons were positioned slightly differently making it slightly more difficult to follow.
Slide eight:
iMovie - editing
I edited all of my footage and sound with iMovie. I thought about using Final Cut as that's a more professional software but I have iMovie on my MacBook whereas Final Cut is only on the school computers so thought I would have more freedom to edit in my spare time by using iMovie. I am also more used to using iMovie compared to Final cut so had more experience with this editing platform. Editing can only really be done by using media technologies. Below is a screen shot of me editing my trailer of 'Westview High' on iMovie towards the end of editing where I had nearly finished.
Slide nine:
YouTube - uploading
I uploaded my final version to YouTube. I use YouTube rather than similar websites like Vimeo because I'm used to YouTube and has the most visitors of the website compared to other video-upload sites. This site also tells you how many views the video has and how many likes and dislikes a video has. It is important to upload a video somewhere rather than individually showing people as many more people can see it once it's uploaded.
Slide ten:
Ancillary Product 1: a listings magazine font cover featuring the new soap
I couldn't use the same typography or colours as to what's on the poster or in the main product as it wouldn't have made the TV listings magazine cover look professional so I used the bright blues,
Slide eleven:
Survey - post-production
I also did a survey online using media technologies via Survey Monkey, this is a really effective way of using the internet to find responses to your questions. I also analysed these results and used the feature where it can make charts to help you view the percentages of who answered what to your questions. Receiving feedback is important so you can see others' views and can work on these for the next project you do. Using media technologies can show an inaccurate view as they are only from the people who use those media technologies.
Slide twelve:
Wix - post-production, evaluation
I chose to do my evaluation as a website on Wix as it is less conventional than just writing an essay. Media technologies are becoming an increasing threat on the 'old school' pen and paper. Media technologies can make large amounts of information exciting and modern to look through. It can also clearly separate questions as you can divide things into 'tabs'. For example, if you had read this whole presentation as an essay would you remember points about each site as clearly? Would you have enjoyed it more/less?
Slide thirteen:
Emaze, Prezi & SlideShare - evaluation & used to present research
Emaze, Prezi and SlideShare are all effective ways of creating interactive presentations of information or data. Emaze and Prezi allow the viewer of the presentation to move freely around the virtual mind map as such where as SlideShare is slightly stricter in the movments. Slideshare was 'acquired' by LinkedIn (owned by Microsoft) in 2012. I used this form of media technology in my evaluation so there wasn't lots of text on my website as it involves the reader a lot more and helps them remember the piece of work. However media technologies does limit you from making the piece of work very 'your own' as (especially with Emaze and Prezi) they encourage the user to use one of their 'themes' so much. This, if you're
unaware is an Emaze presentation.
Slide fourteen:
Google Slides - evaluation
Before using it for my evaluation, I had never used the media technology, Google Slides, before. I used this 3 times for question 1. It was actually harder to use than I thought it would be. With media technologies, they can make things more simple but when expanding your knowledge of media technologies you have to learn new things and new ways of editing pages, this sometimes actually adds time to doing things if you have to learn as you go along where as with paper and pen you know what you're doing. Learning is always good though and I actually quite like Google Slides now.
Slide fifteen:
Facebook & Twitter - post-production, evaluation
I put a post of Facebook and on Twitter asking people to watch my trailer and to fill out the survey so I could collect more responses. This is an easy, free way of getting what you want to say across to many but does limit it to only those who use social media.
