What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Don't press play and use the arrows on the left and right of the emaze presentation to go from slide to slide.

Up until there's instructions on the screen.

On the 'What a MacBook was used for' slide it's supposed to say 'Copyright free we then layered. Bensound and Purple Planet.'

I have also been doing a lot of 'Vlogging' (video blogging) throughout this topic. I've been doing a series of videos where I talk to the camera about where we're up to and what I need to do, called Ventress Class Vlogs. This has been helpful for me to keep track of what I need to do and what I've done but also helpful for an audience to see what I've done right/wrong and if it means I can help 1 person that would be amazing. The link to this series of video logs is here: Ventress Class Vlogs

Incase you are unable to view the emaze presentation here is what each slide says:

What technologies did we used?

  • DSLR Camera X2

  • MacBook Air's iMovie

  • Avairy photo editing

  • Social Media

  • Marantz audio recorder

  • Lights (many different)

Slide on lights:

  • Strap-on-camera box light diffuser

  • Normal battery opperated torch

  • Table lamps

  • Naked bulb

  • iPhone torch

Slide on camera:

my camera: Nikon D3200

My camera did most of the filming as it was easier to upload the footage from mine. However Chloe's was used a fair bit when we wanted different angles of the same action.

Chloe's camera: Nikon D3100

It was very useful have two cameras so similar as we didn't really have to adjust when working from one to the other as they function in almost the same way.

Slide on How hard filming is:

One thing I have learnt from the process of constructing our opening title sequence is how challenging something you'd think as simple, like filming, can be. After working out with Harry Colgan, our Everyman, what we wanted him to act out we then had to check with our storyboard what camera angle we wanted to film it at, and then often needed to adjust it because something would be in the way then many clips had to be filmed and filmed again if mine, or Chloe's, camera went out of focus, a noise was heard or we cut it too short. However by the last few shots we were filming we were a lot quicker with setting up and shooting and felt as if we had made progress and learnt from our previous mistakes.

Slide on Lighting:

Me and Chloe have only made two previous films before, one of which being our continuity task, both weren't very professional. The main lighting in both were sunlight as we didn't think about it as thoroughly as we did with 'Blank'. With this opening title sequence I learnt how to use a box light to diffuse the light and also how to direct light in certain places in order to make shadows to fit with the Film Noir theme. For our media product we also wanted to make it look part horror genre this meant using flickering lights and dark disturbing shadows, luckily my shed light does naturally flicker as turning on but it took a while to film as me and Chloe couldn't focus on the light due to the flicker.

Slide on To foley:

FOLEY:

Relating to or concerned with the addition of recorded sound effects after the shooting of a film.

Me and Chloe had never foley-ed anything before making this film. We learnt how things can sound different and unfitting with the genre after uploading the footage. Therefore we had to record some sounds like the light switch and the finger click after filming. We learnt how to use a Marantz audio recorder and had to play the footage on mute whilst we recorded sound to make sure it was synced with the action.

Slide on Promotion of final product:

Although both me and Chloe have used Survey Monkey before we had never done a survey on subjects our peers weren't also doing. This meant we had to re-phrase our questions so non-media-students would also understand them and not use media termonology. We showed our opening title sequence in assembly to the whole of our year group and the year above and asked them to do our survey. This is the biggest audience me and Chloe have asked to answer our questions. We learnt how to film people answering honestly about our media product, for them to fill out our surveys and do vox pops on what certain things may say to see if they are illegible or legible.

Slide on Editing:

I previously had edited 2 short films using iMovie and Chloe hadn't edited any. This meant through showing Chloe how to use it, I ended up learning a lot too, the sort of things you don't question 'what does  that button do?' which she did, for us to then both learn. We considered Final Cut and did learn the basics of how to edit using that, but decided we found it easier and more convenient to use Apple's iMovie. The editing I had done previously was a lot more basic than some of the things we did in 'Blank'. For example, I had never used the Green/Blue Screen function when putting one lot of footage overlapping another and learnt how to do this well enough to use it in our final cut.

Slide on The industry:

After making this media product, I think me and Chloe have a lot more respect and admiration towards to media and technological industry. Although people with jobs in this industry will have a lot more experience than me and Chloe their job is a lot more difficult than it looks; even sequencing all the footage in a logical and chronological order is a big job and they will be sequencing a lot more than mine and Chloe's two and a half minute film! Me and Chloe have also learnt a lot about the media industry in general as initially we were going to put job roles on all of credits so researched those thoroughly. Also me and Chloe had to research distribution and audience like age ratings for our film and learnt the about distribution services and venues and the conditions of a age rating on a film.

Slide on Website design:

I had never designed a website before this evaluation. I've found Wix a reasonably easy service to use but I have learnt what you can have on a website, e.g the Apps you can add and what you can upload onto there. I've learnt how a website needs to be themed throughout and be easy to navigate around, otherwise the viewer can find it confusing or un-readable. I've also learnt about Copyrighting a website and adding links so that someone who views the website can find out more about you and your work. I've tried to make my website as interactive as possible so it feels personal to someone who has gone on my website.

Slide on Interactive question design:

As I've said, I've tried to make my website as interactive as possible so it feels personal to the viewer. I had used Prezi, Emaze and Slideshare before for previous Media Studies tasks but I had never embeded them onto a website before. I prefer to do an interactive application and embed it, than to do a full blown essay on each page as then the reader can click on it and go through it as I did page by page and also looks a lot more aesthetically pleasing than big blocks of text. I've learned more of what a Prezi and Emaze can do and have made them look a lot better than previous ones I've made.
